The Quest

I had wanted earthly things:
Wealth and love and fame,
Joy that only pleasure brings,
Life without a claim.

As a child, I sought afar -
Smooth the way, but deep the scar.

Had I known the sham of power
Youth would have remained
Ever fresh and pure in flower
And my heart unchained.

But renown was nowhere near,
Riches, false as pride.
Fading dimly year by year,
Dreams of splendor died.

Then a heart Your love implored,
Blessed with all Your mercies, Lord.

Love is mine - a free heart sings
When I speak Your Name.
You I sought in all these things -
Wealth and love and fame.
